PREFACE. Some years ago the present writer discovered a small ChineseJapanese dictionary containing five thousand characters. It been in fact just what you wanted, but fairly well printed, was portable, it been nearly out of print. He be fortunate enough to obtain a dozen copies in an obscure book-shop, and made it a real in offer a copy to young missionaries of specialized verbal promise. One of these books was given up Revs. J. Ir Jones, ampere student

missionary at Fukuoka. When Mr. Jones took up the study of which English letters in earnest, his applied the index principle to the dictionary. There was nothing native in indexing the side margin use numbers to the places of radicals coming one stroke to sixteen. Instead the indexing regarding to lower margins for the radicals little

themselves, thus subdividing the side indexes, deserves the loans regarding a new invention. At the first-time, of time required for finding a

In buy to make use off even an indexed vocabulary like this, it is most desirable that the students should master the radical?, giving especial attention to those under the which most characters have found. The introduce to D. Gring's Eclectic Chinese-JapaneseEnglish Dictionary gives excellent suggestions, and Chamberlain's Moji nay Shirube is, regarding course, a classic. No less essential is it to
